"Porgy and Bess" was always performed and recorded in severely cut form, and the orchestral score has never even been published. Therefore, the general public, and also most musicians, knew this great, still underrated work either through pop renditions of its many wonderful songs or through the colorgul, lushly scored Symphonic Picture prepared in 1941-42 by Robert Russell Bennett, who also scored many Geshwin shows. Yet the lesser known suite heard here, to which Ira Gershwin later gave the name Catfish Row, was devised by Gershwin himself shortly after the work's premiere
