The "Zoey and Sassafras" series has a wide-range of appeal. The stories are engaging and easy to follow even for young readers. Younger children who are not ready to read the series alone will enjoy it as a read-aloud. The "Zoey and Sassafras" series teaches parents and children about Inquiry Science, the method of science instruction promoted by the AAAS (American Academy for the Advancement of Science), the NSF (National Science Foundation), and the NSTA (National Science Teacher's Association). The "Zoey and Sassafras" series will help students succeed academically with the New Generation Science Standards. Through an engaging storyline, it teaches scientific thinking and covers age-appropriate scientific topics. The main character, Zoey, is African American and female. Women and persons of color are underrepresented in STEM careers, something the nation is currently trying to remedy.
